Forthcoming Book: The Dark Side of Social Media

Our new book “The Dark Side of Social Media: Psychological, Managerial and Societal Perspectives” (Elsevier) will be published in Fall 2019.

The Dark Side of Social Media

In this book, Pavica Sheldon, me, and James Honeycutt discuss multiple “dark” aspects of social media. The first part of the book deals with psychological consequences, such as how (exzessive) social media use is linked to narcissism, depression and so forth. The second part looks at negative consequences for firms, in particular being a victim of “shitstorms” (i.e., more formally, “collaborative brand attacks” or “online firestorms”) and a critical view on the validity of social media monitoring. The last part looks at societies as a whole.

examines how this media can negatively affect our lives, tackling current issues like emotional and mental health, shortened attention spans, selective self-presentation and narcissism, the declining quality of interpersonal relationships, privacy and security, cyberstalking, cyberbullying, misinformation and online deception, and negative peer effects.
